Pismo Beach Says ‘No’ to Styrofoam

Pismo Beach is the second city in the county to ban the use of extruded or expanded polystyrene foam food and drink containers, commonly known as Styrofoam. Last week, the City Council voted 5-0 to establish an ordinance putting an end to the product within city limits.

Common items affected by the ban include food containers such as coffee cups, plates, and take-out boxes. Examples of exempt products that use expanded polystyrene include surfboards and life preservers. Further, the ordinance does not include single-use disposable items such as straws, cup lids, or utensils.

SLO City Wants More Say With Cal Poly

With a 4-1 vote on Nov. 16 the San Luis Obispo City Council decided to send Cal Poly President Jeffrey Armstrong a message about the university’s Master Plan Update.

Just what impact they may be able to have with a letter outlining concerns about a planned on campus faculty and staff housing development and a proposed sewage treatment plant on University grounds remains to be seen.

Getting Serious About Open Space

Two meetings set to take place in December will determine the future of the City of SLO’s open space. Although, most of the public input for the process has already taken place.100_2927

The City’s Parks and Recreation Department has been working with the folks in Natural Resources to build a new Open Space Maintenance Plan. Supervising Ranger Doug Carscaden will still take public comments through the end of November, but the draft plan is set to be reviewed by the parks and Recreation Commission Dec. 2 with a City Council meeting to follow two weeks later.

Duking it Out with City Hall

Tempers flared recently when a local citizen arrived at City Hall demanding a meeting with the mayor, the city manager, and the public works director.

That might not seem too out of the ordinary, as City Hall’s across the nation likely see this at least occasionally, but they probably don’t bring a police escort with them to “keep the peace.”

Such was the scene recently, when Joseph Goodwin, who has the Chorro Creek Ranch, located on Chorro Creek Road south of town, arrived at City Hall, frustration threatening to boil over into anger.
