CPC/PI Committee Members Have Been Guest Lecturers In Classrooms

Many of my students will become health professionals; whether physical therapists, primary care physicians, or community health workers, it is important for them to understand the implications of drug use, abuse, and recovery on both the individual and the greater community.  Some may provide health care to people struggling with alcoholism, while others may plan public health programs to prevent and educate about alcohol and other drug use.  Although I can provide information and perspective, my expertise and experience are limited to textbooks and scientific articles.

Students have indicated that one of the most impactful aspects of my course is the stories about alcoholism and recovery given by local AA members.  Words such as “powerful”, “gives me new perspective”, and “personally affected me” are common reactions from students in their individual reflections.  The AA guest lectures provide my students with a more personal understanding of alcoholism, as well as the perspective that people at all stages and places of life can struggle with alcoholism.  I anticipate that experiences such as this will lead to a more thoughtful and well-rounded generation of healthcare professionals.
