Dinner & A Movie: ‘Jurassic World’ a ‘Wow” Moment for Dino-Lovers

Dinner and MovieBy Teri Bayus

To go along with our larger than life meal, the whole crew went to see Jurassic World. The dinosaurs are back and we were all thrilled.
I’m OK with suspending belief that a crazed scientist made a theme park attraction of a living dinosaur by splicing their DNA with a tree frog, but not okay with the female lead Claire (Bryce Dallas Howard), fleeing through the jungle on pink pumps.
I’m mean really; no one but sales people and movie stars wear these shoes! Why would the high powered, number two woman at a huge corporation, be wearing them in the Costa Rica jungle?
Besides that irritating point, Jurassic World is exactly what I expected and loved about the franchise. I was thrilled with Chris Pratt (playing Owen), as I think he is second only to Indiana Jones as an adventure movie star/icon.
I liked the brothers and their believable adventure surviving the escape of a Frankenstein-type dinosaur. Their bond was genuine and thankfully the screenwriters didn’t fill their mouths with precocious antidotes.
The story idea for this film was created by Steven Spielberg and Mark Protosevich who got together privately on several occasions (without studio observance) to confer the notion of doing another installment in the Jurassic Park franchise.
I loved the idea of the velociraptors being trained and was not surprised when the evil guy wanted to weaponize them. I adored the final seen that takes dinosaur wrestling to a new level of awesome.
Writer, producer and director, Colin Trevorrow, started making short films when he was 12-years old. He wrote and directed “Home Base,” a digital, short film that became one of the early viral successes on the Internet. This is only his second feature film.
Their were some cool scenes and “must haves” for future theme parks like the bubble car — called a gyrosphere — the brothers break free of to roam around a pack of dinosaurs.
Spielberg wanted to create a way for people to get up close and personal with the animals, to make it a self-driving, free-roaming experience. It loads on a track, but once you’re out there, you actually get to navigate around the valley of living dinosaurs. I can’t wait until some genius creates on of these!
Director Trevorrow, came up with the idea of featuring “Mosasaurus,” the film’s main marine reptile shown in the movie trailer. He pitched the idea to Spielberg of having the Mosasaurus feed on a shark in front of bleachers filled with park guests.
Spielberg loved the idea of the Mosasaurus eating the shark but suggested that when the animal grabs the shark that the whole bleacher section submerge underwater using a hydraulic system so that the audience will be able to see the Mosasaurus feeding underwater. Some 200 extras sat in the bleacher section. It jumps out of the water and soaks the crowd.
This was the director’s favorite moment of shooting and a real “Wow” moment for the audience.
This is a great summer movie and it must be scene in 3D. Take the dinosaur lover in your life; they will be thrilled. Live Well…
