Four Caught in DUI Net

A recent DUI checkpoint operation netted a handful of skunked drivers and some other scofflaws, too.

According to a news release, the trap was set in the 500 block of Higuera St., in Downtown SLO and manned from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 25.

“Checkpoints are placed in locations that have the greatest opportunity for achieving drunk and drugged driving deterrence,” said SLOPD Sgt. John Villanti, who heads up the traffic division, “and provide the greatest safety for officers and the public.”

Some 474 vehicles were “screened” during the checkpoint and four DUI-alcohol suspects were arrested. Sgt. Villanti said they didn’t catch anyone who was high on drugs behind the wheel, but did arrest one for alleged possession of illegal drugs.

Five people were cited for driving on a suspended license or for having no license at all and one was caught with an open container of alcohol. They also cited one other driver for an undisclosed code violation.

Though the numbers might seem low for arrests, especially on a Thursday Night in Downtown SLO, that’s really a good thing when one’s intent is to be proactive and deter drunk driving.

“Law Enforcement,” Sgt. Villanti said, “emphasizes the preventable nature of drunk driving reminding everyone that all it takes is a little planning ahead. Designate a sober driver or call a cab. But whatever you do, don’t drink and drive.”

SLOPD will set up another checkpoint in December and will do “DUI saturation patrols” on random days. SLOPD got a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety (COTS), through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to pay for any overtime incurred by officers manning the checkpoint.

According to NHTSA, checkpoints have provided the most effective documented results of any of the DUI enforcement strategies, while also yielding considerable cost savings of $6 for every $1 spent. Some 90% of California drivers approve of checkpoints, said Sgt. Villanti.

The COTS has a mobile app (for iOS and Android devices) that locates bars and restaurants that participate in a “Designated Driver VIP” program, offering free incentives at each establishment for people who are acting as designated drivers.

Also, the app can help someone who has been bending the ol’ elbow to get a safe ride home from Uber, Lyft or Curb — all from one app that’s free to download.
