Police Warn of Rash of Thefts

San Luis Obispo Police Department is warning residents of a plague of home and car break-ins over the past couple of months with a new public relations campaign.

Lt. Bill Proll said there have been more than 400 thefts from vehicles and homes since last Dec. 1.

“These crimes include vehicle and residential burglaries,” said Sgt. Proll. “A majority of these cases have been from unlocked vehicles or unlocked residences.”

Police have stepped up patrols and began the PR campaign to try and nip this scourge in the bud.

“The police department has stepped up public education regarding the importance of locking vehicles and homes,” Sgt. Proll said, “and removing or placing valuables out of sight. As part of the department’s efforts to increase awareness we have placed an electronic message board on Santa Rosa Street at Oak to remind residents to lock up.” They’ve also taken the campaign to Cuesta College and Cal Poly.

“We want to remind our residents to close and lock your doors and windows and remove your valuables or keep them out of sight,” he said. “And, if you see something suspicious to call the police department.”
