All the fun that didn’t involve a brewski seemed to be going on at Cal Poly the last couple of weeks.

Sure there was the Seven Sisters Beer Fest –page 41 – and the Central Coast Renaissance Fair – Cover Photo and page 5– both in town but for good old inspiration the University had a lot going.

It’s not everyday that NASA sends one other latest Astronaut inductees to Cal Poly. In fact when Lt. Cmdr. Victor Glover, U.S. Navy, stopped by his alma mater last week he was on vacation. The 1999 engineering grad came to town to hang out with about 160 high school students looking at going to college as engineers and encouraging them on their path at the “EPIC” summer camp on campus – front page and page 42.

The “Poly P” also got a facelift, ongoing through August, and hiking is a lot easier and safer up the hillside thanks to the work of the California Conservation Corps – page 8. We’ve got a little history on just how that thing got put there to begin with and some of the storied past may surprise you.

For a bit more levity, a team of current and graduating Cal Poly students has put out their second fun little app, a game that lets the artistic minded create “singing monsters” inside your smartphone – page 9.

Not everything can be fun and games however; there was a fair share of less positive stories since our last issue. The community has once again had to rally in mourning a young woman lost to senseless violence – page 43.

Those stories and more are covered in depth in the July 23rd issue of SLO City News.
