SLO Man Arrested For Child Sex Crimes

San Luis Obispo Police arrested a man for a second time on suspicion of lewd acts with a minor, involving two separate young girls.

According to SLOPD Lt. Jeff Smith, on June 29, officers were investigating a reported case of lewd acts being committed against a 13-year-old SLO girl. The alleged victim was 10 at the time of the alleged crimes, and the suspect was a friend of the family, when the crimes allegedly occurred, Lt. Smith said.

“The family had just learned of the crime prior to contacting law enforcement.” Investigators determined that the suspect committed the alleged crimes while he was “staying in her family’s home.”

The suspect, identified as Matthew Roland Betts, 44 of SLO, was a familiar name to police, who had arrested him for a very similar incident that happened just a few months ago.

“In March of 2016,” Lt. Smith said, “suspect Betts was at a friend’s house when he was observed committing a lewd act against an 8-year-old girl.” Betts was booked into County Jail on that case for suspicion of lewd acts upon a child.

He was booked again after the other case came to light on suspicion of lewd acts upon a child and “forcible acts of sexual penetration.” His bail was set at $250,000.
