Symposium Covers Water Conditions

Drought2aBy Theresa-Marie Wilson

Water availability and conservation measures were the topic of the first ever South County Water Symposium.  About 200 concerned citizens and elected officials attended the event to hear subject specialists discuss the outlook for a resource we all need to survive. The Arroyo Grande & Grover Beach Chamber of Commerce hosted the event.
The cities of Arroyo Grande, Pismo Beach, Grover Beach and the Oceano Community Services District were among the agencies represented during the public meeting that also featured vendors offering conservation-minded tips to reduce water usage on a daily basis.
In April, following four years of devastating drought conditions, California Governor Jerry Brown issued statewide mandatory water restrictions with an overall 25 percent target reduction.
The target for Arroyo Grande was 28%, which the city has met, and for the month of July there was a 41% reduction. Continue reading Symposium Covers Water Conditions

Petty Officer 3rd Class William Carlisle, a missile technician and a 2007 Arroyo Grande High School graduate and A.G. native is serving aboard the USS Henry M. Jackson (SSBN 730)’s Blue Crew.

The USS Henry M. Jackson (SSBN 730) is one of the Navy’s 14 Ohio-class ballistic missile submarines, also referred to as “boomers” that patrol the world’s oceans for months at a time, serving as undetectable launch platforms for submarine-launched ballistic missiles.

Together with land-based missiles and strategic bombers, the Navy’s Ohio-class submarines are part of the nation’s strategic nuclear deterrence triad. Because of their stealth, they are considered the most survivable component of the triad. The Navy is currently developing a follow-on submarine to replace the Ohio-class, which will begin to reach the end of their service lives in the late 2020s.

The Ohio Replacement Ballistic Missile Submarines will remain in service through the 2080s.
