Community Calendar: March 5–18, 2015

Hum, Baby! Are you a San Francisco Giants fan? The San Luis Obispo Downtown Association is bringing the Giants’ three World Series Trophies to Farmer’s Market from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, March 5. The trophies will be on display at Davidson’s Furniture between Broad and Nipomo streets. For more information contact the SLO Downtown Association at 541-0286 or see: www.downtownslo.com. The trophies are from the Giants’ World Championships in 2010, 2012 and 2014.


ECOSLO has several free events, hikes and trail workdays in March.
• SLO County workday, 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, March 7 at Lopez Lake. Bring water and wear long pants and sturdy shoes. Supplies will be provided. Meet at the marina and use the park the rest of the day for free.
• Natural San Luis docent hikes starting at 9 a.m. (bring water and wear sturdy shoes): Saturday, March 7 meet at Reservoir Canyon trailhead; Saturday, March 14 meet at the Stenner Springs trailhead on TV Tower Road; Saturday, March 28 meet Bowden Ranch open space, meet at the Lizzie Street Trailhead.
• SLO Steward Trail workdays 9 a.m.-noon (wear long pants and sturdy shoes, water and snacks provided), Saturday, March 14 at Froom Ranch, meet at the Home Depot parking lot; and Saturday, March 28 at the Johnson Ranch trail.
• SLO City parks’ ranger-led hike up Cerro San Luis 1 p.m. Sunday, March 15 at Cerro San Luis.


COMM Cal 7 sis art shwSeven Sisters Gallery in Morro Bay will celebrate its Ninth Anniversary with an open house and limerick contest, set for 5-8 p.m. Friday, March 13 during the monthly Art Walk. Limerick writers can submit entries until noon on the 13th. Free to enter, see the gallery’s Facebook page for details. Prizes include one of the gallery’s signature gold and silver Morro Rock pendants and a print by photographer Ronnie Goyette. Art Central Gallery, 1329 Monterey St., SLO will hold an artists’ reception from 6-8 p.m. Friday, March 6 during Art After Dark and featuring the fine art photography of Cheryl Strahl and “Bubble Squeak” art using bubble wrap that will run through March 31. Strahl, a retired software engineer relatively new to the art world. Free and open to the public. Strahl’s work, taken in Yosemite, Montaña de Oro, Morro Bay, Alaska, Costa Rica and beyond, has earned recognition both locally and nationally. “I am loving my photographic journey,” she said, “and am so fortunate to live in such a beautiful place!” Bubble and Squeak has the vivid ink paintings of M.L. Burdick.


The Monterey/Morro Bay Coast Guard Auxiliary offers free vessel safety inspections the second Saturday of each month at the Morro Bay launch ramp. Boat owners can get 2015 United States Coast Guard inspection sticker free to affix to their boats. A vessel safety check is a courtesy examination of vessels to verify the presence and condition of certain safety equipment required by State and Federal regulations and could avoid substantial fines should boaters be boarded by the U.S.C.G. or other law enforcement and found in violation. Inspections by appointment, call Ray David (805) 440-8501. They can make boat calls too   at local docks, moorings or driveways for trailered boats.


Los Osos artist, Pandora Nash-Karner will show her original, contemporary ceramic work from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 7 at Sienna Home Boutique, 132 Bridge St., Arroyo Grande. It’s functional and sculptural (and decorative) food-safe ware, treasure boxes, sculpture, jewelry and medallions for fiber artists and jewelers. Honor Flight Central Coast California’s meetings are held the second Monday of each month at 6 p.m. at the American Legion Post 66, located behind the SLO Veteran’s Memorial Building, 801 Grand Ave., SLO. Meetings are open to the public.Food available for purchase at 5:15.


Special events at the Los Osos Library, 2075 Palisades Ave., and sponsored by the Friends of the Library, are being offered in March. At 3 p.m. Wednesday, March 18 is “Make ‘n Take,” featuring an art project or other creative project for kids 5-older. This month they plan to make paper kites. Free. Call 528-1862 for information. The Morro Bay Women’s Connection luncheon will feature speaker, Carol Guttman, a former real estate agent on “Home Improvement 101. First Fix Yourself;” and “Hats and More,” featuring fashionable head wear from the Morro Bay Hat Co. is set for noon-1:30 p.m. Thursday, March 12. Cost is $5 and first-time guests are free. COMM Cal SLOArtShwPainter, Laurel Sherrie, has opened a new exhibit of her work at the Gallery at the Network Mall, 778 Higuera Ste. B, SLO through March 31. Sherrie, who recently became a partner in the gallery, paints landscapes of rolling hills, the coast and vineyards of SLO County. The Gallery showcases more than 50 artists’ work. The Estero Bay Republican Women’s Federated’s next luncheon meeting is set for 11:30 a.m. Thursday, March 19 at the View Restaurant, located in the Morro Bay Golf Course clubhouse. Cost is $22 for members. Speaker is Si Tenenberg, who has been collecting donations and mailing care packages to our troops overseas since 2006. COM CAL Cuesta ArtShwFine artist and 1992 Cuesta College Honored Alumnus, Holly Lane, returns to the Central Coast for her first solo art exhibition at the Harold J. Miossi Art Gallery at Cuesta College, through March 27. An opening reception is set for 5-8 p.m. Friday, March 6. An artist talk with Lane is at 6. The show, titled, “Fortuna’s First Assignment and Other Musings,” will feature a cross-section of Lane’s works created over the past five years. Join the SWAP Weed Warriors for its monthly battle against weeds and erosion in the Elfin Forest in Los Osos. Meet at 9 a.m. Saturday, March 7 at the end of 15th St., off Santa Ysabel Ave., Los Osos. Dress in layers for the weather and wear sturdy shoes, long pants and sleeves, bring gloves and a shovel. Don’t block driveways when you park and leave pets at home. South African-born author, Heather Mendel, will give a presentation, “Oracles, Intuition and Imagination: Foretelling the future or engaging fully in the present moment?” from 7-9 p.m. Friday, March 13 at Coalesce Bookstore, 845 Main St., Morro Bay. Free. Mendel will unveil her latest work, “The Sacred Mandala Lenormand Oracle.” Mendel and husband Rabbi Norm Mendel lived locally for 15 years and now reside in Upstate New York. Her early works include: “The Syzygy Oracle: Transformational Tarot and the Tree of Life,” 2013; “Dancing in the Footsteps of Eve: Retrieving the healing gift of The Sacred Feminine,” 2011; and, “Towards Freedom: A feminist haggadah for men and women,” 1995. An art exhibit using redacted government documents to protest nuclear power is being shown at the Steynberg Gallery, 1531 Monterey St, San Luis Obispo now through March 13. Created by nuclear power critics, David Weisman of the Alliance for Nuclear Responsibility and artist and activist Russell Hodin, “Redacted,” questions how much utility companies and the “regulatory” agencies are revealing about nuclear safety and how much is being hidden. An artists’ reception will be held during Art After Dark, from 6-9 p.m. Friday March 6. Free.


San Luis Obispo author, Kelly Moreno, sill sign his debut novel, “A Duty to Betray” from 2-4 p.m. Saturday, March 7 at Coalesce Bookstore, 845 Main St., Morro Bay. In the book, Dr. Ricardo Ruiz, a young psychologist just beginning his career, is plunged squarely into the middle of two seemingly irreconcilable legal obligations — keeping patient disclosures confidential while still obeying the requirement to “warn and protect” anyone their patient is likely to harm. Set at Camarillo State Hospital on California’s Central Coast, the book delves into this legal, ethical, and ultimately moral dilemma. Moreno is a psychologist, forensic examiner, and professor of psychology at Cal Poly and lives with his wife and daughter in San Luis Obispo.


The City of Arroyo Grande Recreation Department is holding a huge Rummage Sale on Saturday, March 7 at Elm Street Park.  The sale will benefit the City of Arroyo Grande Recreation Division’s Children’s Services programs. The Grover Beach Community Library has scheduled a giant used book sale from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Saturday, March 7. Thousands of new-found fiction, non-fiction, classics, research, table top, collectibles and books that have been donated and saved since last October. “There will be something for everybody at this sale,” Board President, Nan Fowler, said. The first Dana Adobe Cultural Center Spring Craft & Vendor Fair is scheduled for March 7 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. With over 40 booths of local crafts persons, authors, independent representatives from origami Owl to Tupperware, from Mary Kay, Pampered Chef and Lemonade & Love for Sam, vendors will be displaying and selling their goods. Nipomo High School Drama Department will have a booth as a fundraiser to send students to Scotland to perform in the Fringe Festival. The Five Cities-Pismo Beach branch of the American Association of University Women is collecting used books for its 20th Annual Book Sale on May 16. Proceeds fund scholarships. To donate books call Linda at 929-6958.


In collaboration with the Central Coast Sculptors Group, the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art presents an exhibition of new sculpture by two Los Osos artists, George Jercich and Ron Roundy. “Overhead, Underfoot, and In Your Face,” will be on view from March 6 -29. The two artists have worked in concert to produce a site-specific installation of glass, metal, and mixed media. A reception with the artists is s et for 6-9 p.m. Friday, March 6 during Art After Dark. The Museum of Art is located at 1010 Broad St., on the west end of Mission Plaza. The Arroyo Grande and Grover Beach Chamber of Commerce will host a breakfast program featuring Grover Beach Mayor John Shoals from 8-9 a.m. Friday, March 13 at the South County Regional Center, 800 W. Branch St., in Arroyo Grande. Shoals will share his vision for Grover Beach, give updates on planned infrastructure projects and answer questions from audience. They City of Pismo Beach will host a workshop on undergrounding utilities from 5:30-7 p.m. Wednesday, March 18 in the city council chambers at City Hall. Eric Eldridge from the City engineering division will provide information on options the public has for undergrounding overhead utility wires. This will be a general information workshop that will apply citywide and is not specific to any one neighborhood.


 

COmm Chorus PacificHorizon-810Celebrating 50 years of song. The Pacific Horizon Chorus of San Luis Obispo County, formerly known as the Cuesta Belles, will hold an open house to celebrate its 50th Anniversary at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 17 at the United Methodist Church, 1515 Frederick St., SLO. Former members and the public are invited to join in the fun at this free event. A pictorial presentation of past chorus history will be offered, along with light refreshments, and a performance by the chorus. Founding member, Gail Miernicki, will be on hand to share her memories of her 60-years as a Sweet Adeline. Affiliated with Sweet Adelines, International, the chorus was chartered on March 17, 1965, and has entertained generations of local residents with the ringing chords of a cappella barbershop-style harmony through their annual shows, High Tea events, seasonal quartet and chorus performances and more. Public Library branches throughout SLO County will celebrate Women’s History Month in March with a variety of free activities. These include film screenings, panel discussions, radio programs and other special events. Of particular interest will be an event on March 21, at 2 p.m., with filmmaker Kelly Candaele. He will introduce and discuss his documentary film, “A League of Their Own,” about the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. This film includes stories about his mother and aunt who were players in the league. The documentary inspired the feature film of the same name. The Italian Catholic Federation (I.C.F.) at St. Patrick’s Church in Arroyo Grande will host five Fish Fries during Lent. Mark your calendar and join us for a delicious fish and chips and coleslaw dinner. Fish fries will be held on the following Fridays: February 20, February 27, March 6, March 20 and March 27 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. in St. Patrick’s Church Hall, 501 Fair Oaks Ave., Arroyo Grande. The event is Jan. 23 from 6-8 p.m. and includes wine (21-over), appetizers and after hours aquarium tours. Learn the adaptations and challenges our local shark species face and debunk the myths associated with them.
