That’s The Way it Was

For 20 years of my life, I was a local television news anchor, and for more than half that time, a news director as well, so it shouldn’t be much of a surprise that I’ve been following with great interest the salacious saga of former NBC news anchor Brian Williams, who was suspended earlier this year then demoted last week for embellishing several news accounts that he was involved in.
I blame NBC for letting the situation get out of hand as it did, but as far as I’m concerned William’s first big mistake is that he let it get away from him.

It’s an ego trip just waiting to happen when your real purpose for being there was to present in the most effective way you could, news reports and features that would have some value to your viewers. Credibility here was the key, and that’s not something you build in just one day. Continue reading That’s The Way it Was

Nightwriters: The Visit

Tony PiazzaBy Tony Piazza

I can’t remember the quote verbatim, but I can paraphrase; “Be courteous, because who knows, you might be entertaining an angel.” I’m not sure it was an angel who appeared that summer day many years back; but if it wasn’t, it was surely the closest thing.
I was sickly as a child. Just one of those spins of life’s wheel. Some kids could play in the pouring rain with no effect, and others, like myself, got into a small draft, and ended up with the sniffles. It was hard on my mother. I weathered it, but being her only child, she worried constantly. Continue reading Nightwriters: The Visit

Every Friday throughout the summer there is only one place to be. Between 5.30 p.m. and 8 p.m. the Mission Plaza in downtown San Luis Obispo becomes a concert venue and host to the annual Concerts in the Plaza series. Celebrating its 20th year this unique venue has become the place both locals and tourists alike kick off their weekend, “let down their hair and boogie down” to the sounds of a wide ranging selection of bands including many local ones such as Damon Castillo and the world renowned Young Dubliners.
