Help Sought with Cuesta Fire Cause

Cal Fire is asking for help in identifying the vehicle they suspect is responsible for starting the Cuesta Fire and at least two others.

“The Cuesta Fire was reported on [Sunday] Aug. 16 at approximately 6:12 p.m.,” reads a notice from Cal Fire. “Investigators believe a northbound vehicle traveling uphill over the Cuesta Grade was experiencing some type of mechanical issue that ignited dry vegetation adjacent to the road.

The same vehicle may also be responsible for a fire on an uphill section of Highway 101, the Nojoqui Grade, in Santa Barbara County and on an uphill section of Highway 41 in Northern San Luis Obispo County.”

Estuary Forum, Aug. 29

The Morro Bay National Estuary Program is hosting a free public forum to give local residents and visitors a chance to learn about the health of the estuary and watershed. The forum is set for 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 29 at the Morro Bay Community Center multi-purpose room.

NEWS NEP Forum 08-29NEP Monitoring Program Manager, Ann Kitajima, will discuss water quality and bacteria in the bay and watershed. Restoration Projects Manager, Jen Nix, will discuss the health of eelgrass in the bay, as well as past and future replanting efforts. There will also be Q&A sessions and educational displays. Burning Candle Almost Burns Up House

Residents of a San Luis Obispo duplex escaped serious injury when a candle left burning ignited a small fire in one unit that was mostly put out with a fire extinguisher by the neighbor.

According to the SLO Fire Department at 4:22 a.m. Friday, Aug. 21, they got a report of a structure fire at 2179 Beebee St. First arriving was a paramedic truck company that reported smoke billowing from downstairs windows and the front door of one unit. Hwy 101 Job Starts Monday

banner_roadWorkAheadCaltrans will turn its attention to Hwy 101 through San Luis Obispo starting Monday, Aug. 24, with overnight lane closures, traffic controls and temporary ramp closures.

The “Pavement Preservation Project” for Hwy 101 will lay down a “Bonded Wearing Course,” a coating designed to extend the life of the road surface.

The project runs from San Luis Bay Drive to Reservoir Canyon Road and will last until sometime next January, depending on the weather.

Overnight closures will be from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sundays-Thursdays and Thursdays-Fridays 11:55 p.m. to 6 a.m. One lane in each direction will remain open at all times.

Telfer Highway Technologies of McClellan, Calif., is the contractor for the $4.5 million project.

Caltrans reminds motorists to move over and slow down when driving through construction zones.

 

Cuesta Cougars Spotted

Cuesta College is reporting the spotting of three of its school mascot animals — cougars — over the past few weeks.

Two mountain lion sightings have been reported at the Hwy 1 Campus over the past three weeks.

According to the Cuesta Police Department, at about 9 p.m. Monday, Aug. 17 a pair of mountain lion cubs was sighted “near the college’s maintenance yard, located along the southwest border of campus near the O’Connor Road entrance.” Continue reading Cuesta Cougars Spotted
