Empty Bowls Event Brings Community Together

It isn’t often that several hundred people get together to have lunch, but it has become a tradition for a good cause for many local folks.

About 600 tickets were sold for the 5Cities Homeless Coalition’s 4th Annual Empty Bowl Community Luncheon held last week at St. Patrick’s Church Parish Hall in Arroyo Grande.

“We hope this event brings continued awareness that homelessness is a problem that can’t be solved by one individual group,” said Pismo Beach Mayor Shelly Higginbotham who serves has the 5CHC board president.

“It is going to take all of working together to solve the problems here in the South County.”

For $25 attendees received a handcrafted ceramic bowl made by area artists that was then filled with their choice of soups and bread donated by the local restaurants. City dignitaries, law enforcement officials and other well-known community leaders ladled out soup.

Cuesta Inlet Cleaned Up Again

With 21 Grizzly Academy cadets supplying the youthful muscles and 15 Celebrate Los Osos volunteers overseeing the work, all the boats stored at Cuesta Inlet in Los Osos were inspected for compliance with the rules, and only three had to be removed and scrapped.

The Grizzlies and Celebrators noted 221 boats — 74 canoes, 101 kayaks, 13 dinghies, 29 sailboats and three boards — were being stored on what is private property. The owners have agreed to let cuest inlet clean upthe long-time use continue so long as each boat that needs to be license through DMV is, and all the boats have contact information permanently affixed to the hull.

In the photos, Grizzly Academy cadets lift, drag, float and pull boats to a roll off dumpster and a fateful final voyage to the dump. Cadets and volunteers also picked up broken chairs, beer bottles, trash, and bits of lumber.
