Garbage Collection Rate Increase on the Horizon

Garbage collection rates will increase a modest amount after a multi-agency agreement was approved.

I do recognize that every increase, even $2 a month, is significant for portions of our population. The other side of that is the alternative. It isn’t like we can just come up with another solution, unless we are going to stop trash pickup.

The contract with South County Sanitation Services (SCSS) is held jointly with the cities of Arroyo Grande, Pismo Beach and Grover Beach as well as the Oceano Community Services District.

Last week both the Grover Beach and Pismo Beach city councils approved a multi-year rate-setting proposal with SCSS.

Public Art Supporters Become Artists at Fundraiser

Community members put brush to canvas and created their own masterpieces during the recent Bluegrass and Brushes fundraiser benefiting Arroyo Grande Public Art (AGPA).

About 70 people attended the event held at the Women’s Club of Arroyo Grande where two art bars with instructors were set up for the creatively inclined to paint a landscape or create a unique wineglass.

County Probation Honored for PROB Program

County Probation got an “atta-boy” from the California State Association of Counties for a program that helps people stop from re-offending and ending up back behind bars.

County Probation was given the 2015 CSAC Challenge Merit Award for its innovative, “Post Release Offender Meeting” program or PROB, “which quickly connects offenders with services soon after their release from incarceration,” County Probation said in a news release. “More than 250 entries were submitted for this year’s awards and the County’s program received one of only 42 awards distributed this year.”
