French Opens Health Pavilion

French Hospital in San Luis Obispo cut the ribbon at the official grand opening of its new, “Copeland Health Education Pavilion,” providing advanced health care research facilities and educational resources.

With nearly 200 local dignitaries and community members on hand, attendees were given a short program and then allowed to roam the 3-story, 18,000 square foot building that has two classrooms, a conference room, boardroom, and two “advanced learning facilities.” It is located on the French main campus on Johnson Avenue, SLO.

Morro Bay Free Thanksgiving Dinner

You don’t have to cook a huge meal or be by yourself on Thanksgiving. Morro Bay’s Annual Free Thanksgiving Dinner is set for 1-3 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 27 at the Community Center, 1001 Kennedy Way, Morro Bay. All community members are invited to this traditional turkey dinner with all the trimmings.

Nancy Castle and Chuck Stoll are leading the numerous volunteers in the monumental effort to cook and put on a dinner for hundreds of people.

Folks are asked to bring a non-perishable food item to donate for the use at the weekly Monday night free dinners at the Vet’s Hall. They could also use cash donations.

The dinner is hosted by the Morro Bay Peace Officers’ Association, Morro Bay Seniors, and Art Goes Places with a number of local businesses donating to and supporting the dinner.

Giving Thanks, Over the River and Through the Wood

I grew up in sunny California, but my family and I always celebrated Thanksgiving as though we were living in the snow-covered peaks of Vermont.

As we took the annual trek to my grandfather’s house in San Francisco from our house in Woodside, 40 miles south, all of us in the car, dad, mom, bother Jimmy, sister Ann, and I would sing our favorite ode to Thanksgiving written by Lydia Maria Child in 1844 that started out, “Over the river, and through the wood, to Grandmother’s house we go. The horse knows the way to carry the sleigh through the white and drifted snow…”

Wild Turkey Season Open

It’s hunting season for game birds with goose, duck and now wild turkey seasons open at the same time.

Wild turkey is very healthy alternative to store bought turkey, as it’s low in fat and has no additives. You can’t get much more natural than that

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (formerly Fish & Game) opened the statewide fall wild turkey season Nov. 14 and it continues through Sunday, Dec. 13.

To legally hunt turkeys requires a state hunting license and special upland hunting stamp, which allows a hunter to take one bird a day and a maximum of two in a season, according to CDFW. Either sex is allowed to be taken but hunters prefer to go after the big, colorful, tom turkeys.

New Tech School Complete

A dedication and ribbon cutting ceremony last Friday marked the completion of construction of Central Coast New Tech High School in Nipomo.CN New tech principal

“It has been my pleasure to see this school grow up from its groundbreaking to its final completion,” State Assemblymen Katcho Achadjian told the crowd. “You are already making a difference in this community. I have been a business man for 37 years in this community and an elected official for 17 years, and the only reason I have had success in those ventures has been a result of my education.”
