77th Annual Poly Rodeo: Bigger Digs, Bigger Crowd

Rain forced the cancellation of several Cal Poly Open House events April 7, including the much-anticipated Cal Poly Rodeo.

While disappointed parents and cowboys visited downtown despite the drizzle, the historic move of the rodeo to Alex G. Spanos Stadium went ahead as planned the next day with sold out attendance.  Theoretically that left room for 11,000 spectators although not all seats were occupied.

Cal Poly Police Department’s Deputy Chief Brenda Trobaugh declined to say exactly how many officers were on duty for the festivities but noted that all department resources had been called upon for the weekend events, and as of the successful conclusion of Saturday’s rodeo there had ben no major incidents related to the Open House.

Cal Poly President Jeffery Armstrong called the Poly Royal an, “complete success.”

A bigger venue also lent itself for a bigger spectacle. For the first time the rodeo was concluded with motocross jumps and pyrotechnics.
