Are you prepared for a disaster?

Earthquakes, wildfires, monster storms and yes, tsunamis, all are possible on the Central Coast on any given day.

“Are you prepared for a disaster?”

That’s what the Community Emergency Response Team or CERT training program seeks to make sure of, and local residents will have two chances to sign up and take the courses being offered by the County Fire Chiefs Association and the Sheriff’s Advisory Foundation.

CERT 5-week courses are set to start Tuesdays, Jan. 11 in Cambria and Wednesdays, Jan. 12 in Morro Bay. Cost is a $35 materials fee and each class is from 6-9 p.m. (20 hours total).

Pre-registration is a must. Call the Cambria Fire Department at 927-6240, Cal Fire/South Bay Fire Sta. 15 at 528-1053, or Morro Bay Fire at 772-6242; or email to: [email protected].

CERT training is learning about how and when to turn off your utilities; firefighting skills; medical skills; hazardous materials and terrorism awareness; light search and rescue techniques; and most importantly, self reliance.

People should be prepared to be on their own for as much as 72 hours before help arrives in the event of a natural disaster, and CERT shows how to do that. CERT also teaches ways to help others when disaster strikes.
