A benefit barbecue is planned to help Mel Brenneise, one of Morro Bay’s favorite residents and local characters from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 11 at Calvary Lutheran Church, 480 Monterey St. On the menu are a tri-tip sandwich, drink and chips. Suggested donation is $10 for one lunch and $20 for three.
Brenneise was a long-time Dial-a-Ride driver who helped two generations of local kids get to school safely and home again before he retired. He has been a police department Community Volunteer member since the inception of the program and has always been very active volunteering with the group and in the community.
He was the “heart and soul” of the PD’s Caroling Cops event every December from the start (some 18 years). He was also blessed with a wonderful country music singing voice, and entertained for years with local bands and at karaoke shows.
