Bell Street Farms’ An Out-Of-This-World Bistro

Dinner & A Movie

By Teri Bayus

The voracious appetite is born where the chef’s imagination flourishes. This is never more apparent than when an eatery contains a farm in the equation.

Pure magic is the result at Bell Street Farm, where owner, Jamie Gluck, has carved an out-of-this-world bistro, well worth the drive from Santa Barbara or San Luis Obispo.

In Los Alamos, at the sole exit off Hwy 101 that houses some spectacular eateries (Full Of Life Flatbread and Bob’s Well Bread), Bell Street Farm offers the most phenomenal lunch fare on the Central Coast.

On my first visit, we sat out back on the patio and ordered the salad sampler. Four spectacular delights filled my plate. Roasted broccoli with chili flakes, pickled golden beets with goat cheese and walnuts, bacon potato salad and quinoa with roasted almonds, all were with a fresh twist on a healthy choice.

Gary had his version of salad, pineapple upside-down cake, which he deemed so good, he ordered and ate another. On our way back from L.A., we made sure Bell Street Farm was our lunch stop.

I inhaled a house pâté sandwich made with pork and calf liver with pistachios, mustard, arugula and pickled onions on a fresh, French baguette. It was amazing.

Gary had the house smoked pastrami with pickled pasilla peppers, melted provolone and house mayo. It was delicious and tender.

We shared a bottle of Bieler rosé wine, and then moved on to the organic roasted cauliflower soup. We also took home a whole rotisserie chicken knowing that the cupboards were bare. With the white hummus accompaniment and the farm salad with roasted golden beets, candied walnuts, apple slices, Point Reyes bleu cheese, arugula and butter leaf lettuce all sprinkled with the house vinaigrette, it was a wonderful way to welcome us back to our home.
