The SLO Chamber welcomed new member, Sirens Sea Glass Gallery with a ribbon cutting ceremony last month.  Sirens Sea Glass Gallery is owned and operated by artist Julie Bunce and features a gallery and jewelry studio, highlighting fine art sea glass mosaics and hand wrapped jewelry. Camp Cinder, a fire fighting summer camp for girls, got a $5,000 grant from The Community Foundation San Luis Obispo County to help pay for housing in the Cal Poly dorms for the 18 high school girls who participated. Campers get introduced to firefighting in hopes that they will consider a future career in the fire service. Camp Cinder was one of 24 grantees with the Community Foundation, totaling some $193,000. The SLO Chamber welcomed another new member, Cycletribe, SLO’s first dedicated indoor cycling studio.“Working as health coaches, we saw our clients challenged by finding an exercise they enjoyed, committing to it and finding a community to support them in their exercise goals,” said. Marian Regional Medical Center (MRMC) and Arroyo Grande Community Hospital (AGCH), both Dignity Health Central Coast hospitals, announced they’ve been honored for the first time with the 2015 “Greenhealth Partner for Change Award” by Practice Greenhealth. MRMC and AGCH received the award in Portland, Oregon on May 14.    The award honors Dignity Health Central Coast’s, “dedication to the community and global health through the generation of clean energy, green purchasing, recycling and toxic elimination programs.”  In addition, noted the award, “Dignity Health Central Coast continues to provide optimized patient care and employee and patient safety, minimizing environmental impact.” Their energy plant is estimated to produce an annual electrical cost savings of nearly $350,000, and provides about 50 percent of the hospital’s power.


Rabobank recently supported the Housing Trust Fund with both a $500,000 investment and a $10,000 contribution.  Over the years, Rabobank has invested $2.1 million in the HTF’s revolving loan fund and contributed over $70,000 to support the organization’s efforts. “Rabobank is pleased to be able to support the exceptional work that the Housing Trust Fund does to develop and preserve affordable housing in San Luis Obispo County,” said Steven Harding, Rabobank’s Chairman of the Community Leadership Groups. The mission of the HTF is to increase the supply of affordable housing in San Luis Obispo County.  It provides financing and technical assistance to help create and preserve homes that working families, seniors on fixed incomes and persons with disabilities can afford to rent and buy.  Additional information is available online at www.slochtf.org.


For the second time in as many months, United Express, operated by SkyWest Airlines, has announced it will offer an additional daily CRJ 200 flight to and from the San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport (SBP). Starting September 1, United Express will now operate four roundtrips to LAX and three to SFO. This fourth flight is scheduled to arrive at SBP from LAX at 7:53 a.m. and depart SBP for LAX at 8:23 a.m. With three daily Phoenix flights rounding out the lineup, SBP passengers will have 10, non-stop, jet flights to choose from daily. “With these additional flights, our community will see daily seat capacity expand to approximately 552 seats, an increase of about 8.25% over the typical capacity that was available prior to the transition to all Jet Service” said County Airports Director Kevin Bumen. 2015 scholarship winnersSeventeen students from San Luis Obispo and Northern Santa Barbara County schools were honored with $22,000 total in scholarships by the CoastHills Foundation last month. The CoastHills Credit Union Gold Standard Scholarship Award was presented at the Cliffs Resort in Shell Beach.  The scholarship program awarded a total of $17,000 in $1,000 scholarships to graduating high school seniors from San Luis Obispo and Northern Santa Barbara counties. Additional $1,000 awards were given to a Student of the Year from each county. The Foundation also pledged a $215 donation in the name of each student to the charity of his or her choice. “The credit union and its foundation are focused on supporting the community, and this scholarship program is one of our favorite causes,” said CoastHills Community Foundation Director Rebecca Alarcio.


Allan Hancock College has two new associate superintendent/vice presidents in their administration this month. Michael R. Black has been hired as the college’s new associate superintendent / vice president, finance and administration and George A. Railey, Jr. has started as the new associate superintendent / vice president, academic affairs.   “Michael and George are great additions to the college,” said Kevin G. Walthers Hancock’s superintendent and president “Both men are forward thinkers with a wealth of knowledge and experience who will help the college continue changing the odds to ensure our students’ success.”  More information is available online at: www.hancockcollege.edu.


GolfersMore than $57,000 raised during French Hospital Medical Center’s Annual Golf and Tennis Tournament this year went to support the Copeland Health Education Pavilion, currently under construction at FHMC. The French Cup is the ninth annual charity Golf and Tennis Tournament at the San Luis Obispo Country Club. The event broke previous French Cup records with the amount raised.
