Breakthrough Ministry invites the community to honor and celebrate “Leadership, Legacy, Perseverance, Sacrifice, Paying it Forward and Strong Faith.”
The annual event takes place Feb. 27 at 6 p.m. at Breakthrough Ministry, 4251 S. Higuera ST. Suite 200, San Luis Obispo. Following the event there will be a Soul Food Feast including collard greens, mac ‘n’ cheese, fried chicken and cornbread.  A $5 donation in advance is required or $7 at the door. The Atascadero High School Jazz Band and Ensemble will hold a fun night of costumes, popcorn, trivia and a viewing of the original “Jurassic Park” to benefit its competition, clinic and festival schedule. The Morro Bay Rec Department is offering a free, introduction to qi gong, the ancient Chinese healing art, from 2-3:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 27 at the Morro Bay Community Center, 1001 Kennedy Way. The class will be taught by certified qi gong instructor, Devin Wallace, and is a great chance to learn about the traditional Chinese health and wellness practice. Wallace said the easy, gentle routine makes qi gong particularly effective for people with physical limitations caused by age, illness or injury.

Wanna exercise your funny bone? Improvisation comedy classes will be offered from 4-6 p.m. starting Sunday, Feb. 28 and will run for four consecutive weeks at Ignite Movement Studio, 698 Morro Bay Blvd., Morro Bay. Cost is $120 for the 4-week session. The instructor is Sabrina Pratt, a comedian with 15-years of experience studying, performing and teaching improvisational comedy. Join Arroyo Grande Library for a story time specifically targeted to toddlers. They will share stories and fun activities every Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. March 1, 8, 15, 22, and 29. Also on Saturday March 5 at 2 p.m. students from Righetti High School will present traditional regional dances from Mexico. On Saturday, March 12 at 11 a.m. the Arroyo Grande High School Robotics Team will demonstrate how to build and use various robots. The Arroyo Grande Library is located at 800 W. The Grover Beach Community Library has scheduled a giant book sale, Saturday, March 5 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Thousands of new found fiction, non-fiction, classics, research, table top, collectibles and books that have been donated since October. Vacationers, visitors, avid readers, researchers, collectors are invited to attend the sale and stock up on their favorite reads. The Paso Robles Youth Arts Foundation will soon be taking registration for its upcoming Spring Quarter and any local student is invited to enroll for a wide variety of free after-school visual and performing arts classes. Registration opens at 9 a.m. Saturday, March 12 and those without a computer can use the Academy’s computer lab from 9-noon March 12. Computers are limited. All students must submit an enrollment form to the Arts Foundation’s Office, 3201 Spring St., before class requests can be approved. Enrollment forms are available online now. Students are limited to two classes per quarter. There are over 820 class seats to be filled this quarter by students 5-18-years old. You do not need to be residents of Paso Robles, as classes are open to all. Classes include guitar, piano, band, voice, hip hop, ballet, break dance, art, drama, and theater, and new classes include creative writing, creative dance conditioning, show choir, music theory, audio recording, group collaborative art, and songwriting.

Seventeen San Luis Obispo County women have been nominated for the SLO County Women’s Wall of Fame and they will be feted at a gala luncheon set for noon-3 p.m. Saturday, March 12 at the Madonna Inn. Tickets are $36.87 an available online at: slowomen.org. The luncheon is co-sponsored by the SLO County Commission on the Status of Women and South Bay Women’s Network. All nominees in three categories will be recognized at the luncheon and photos of the top three will be placed on the Women’s Wall of Fame hanging in the County Government Center in SLO. Nominated under “Business” are Jane Engle Allen and Jacqueline Fredrick. Under “Service Fields” are Megan Healy, Lori Morgan, June Cockran, Marina Washburn, Cheri Love, Lindsey Collingworth, and Sandra Leber. Under “Volunteers” category are Sue Mckee, Andrea Blanco, Bridget Ready, Angie King, Cheri Michealson, Kathy Roberts, Paulette Staley and Elizabeth Denny. The award honors women who have given in an exemplary way to better the lives of others throughout the year. Keynote speaker is U.C. Take part in the 2nd Annual Hope for the Homeless Golf Tournament, presented by Pismo Beach Golf Course. This scramble tournament will be Saturday, March 5 at the Pismo Beach Golf Course at Hwy 1 and Grand Ave., next to Fin’s Seafood Restaurant. The tournament features a 5-person team scramble format, with a start at 8 a.m.  Check-in begins at 7 a.m. The event offers prizes for first and second place teams, offers an “in the circle” opportunity, a “longest birdie” opportunity, a “closest to the pin” opportunity on two holes, and challenges players to make a hole-in-one on any hole for a $100 cash prize and a cash prize of $500 for a hole-in-one on No. 9. The fee is $225 per team ($45 per player) and provides green fees, morning coffee and pastries, and a delicious barbeque lunch.  Additionally players can purchase mulligans, rent a golf cart (first come-first serve), and club rentals. Invite your non-golfing friends to join in at the post-event barbeque, for  $10 (advance purchase not required, but encouraged). SLO Little Theatre presents the Tony Award-winning musical, Cabaret celebrating the 50th anniversary of its Broadway premiere in 1966 through March 13 with shows at 7 p.m. – Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. There will be a Special Gala Performance on Friday, March 11 at 5:30 p.m. Cabaret is a musical based on a book written by Isherwood, with music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb. It is based on John Van Druten’s 1951 play I Am a Camera, which was adapted from the short novel Goodbye to Berlin (1939) by Christopher Isherwood. Set in 1931 Berlin as the Nazis are rising to power, the darkly comic musical takes place in and around the seedy Kit Kat Klub, and revolves around English cabaret performer Sally Bowles and her relationship with the young American writer Cliff Bradshaw. Overseeing the action is the Master of Ceremonies at the Kit Kat Klub. The club serves as a metaphor for ominous political developments in pre-WWII Germany. The Morro Bay Skateboard Museum is hosting a fund-raiser Movie Night set for 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 27 at the Museum, 699 Embarcadero. Tickets are $10 donation and the movie is the 2005 biographical drama, “Lords of Dogtown,” which tells the tale of a group of young skateboarders in Venice Beach, Calif., during the early 1970s, who were at the forefront of a skating revolution that came with the invention of polyurethane wheels. That innovation birthed the era of trick skating, as riders could now do the same kinds of moves and tricks surfers do on the water. Rated PG-13. Popcorn and prizes.
Cuesta College’s Book of the Year Program is gearing up with a variety of events over the coming weeks. This year’s book is bestselling novel, “The Barbarian Nurseries,” by Héctor Tobar, which explores the experience of being an immigrant in the U.S. The Pulitzer Prize winning L.A. Times journalist and author, Tobar, will discuss the novel from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, March 15 in the Cultural and Performing Arts Center. Young girls who have suffered severe burns are invited to attend a free healing retreat hosted by the non-profit organization, Angel Faces, and set for June 20-26 in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire. Deadline to sign up is March 15 and applications are available online at: angelfaces.com. Based in Encinitas, Angel Faces has offered holistic retreats focusing on the psychosocial needs of injured girls since 2003. Angel Faces was the first organization to offer this kind of healing retreat, which differs significantly from burn camps. The weeklong retreat is free to participants, as donors to Angel Faces pay the $4,500 per girl expenses. Angel Faces’ founder, Lesia Cartelli, herself a burn victim as a young girl, said, “We take girls who hurt inside and out, who may be in a spiral of self-pity, anger and depression, and we teach them to get out of the spiral by embracing the pain as a blessing. We show them how tragedy can wake us to life’s richness, how it touches our heart and our soul on many levels.”

Morro Bay oil painter, Jeff Odell, is the featured artist at a new show in March at the Gallery at Marina Square, 601 Embarcadero. The show runs March 1-29 and there’s a free reception set for 5-8 p.m. Friday, March 11 at the gallery. Odell is a plein air artist who can be seen with his easel and paints working all over Morro Bay, painting landscapes and urban scenes. He’s also completed two public murals, one on Main Street at Tacos de Mexico and the other hanging in the gym at Del Mar Elementary School, as well as being one of the principle artists that transformed the City Park bus stop. Odell’s paintings cover a span of over 30 years making his paintings of Morro Bay a historical archive of the town and waterfront through the years.

Cal Poly University Art Gallery is showing the work of internationally acclaimed graphic designer, Tad Carpenter, now through Friday, March 18. Spring docent training for the local state parks will be held on three consecutive Saturdays — April 2, 9 and 16, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Trainees will visit each of the park sites, Pismo, Montaña de Oro and Morro Bay to learn about opportunities in each area. French Hospital is holding a free diabetes education class to provide education and resources to those with the disease, those newly diagnosed, or those who would like a refresher course. The classes are from 5-6:30 p.m. Mondays, March 7, 14 and 21 in French’s Copeland Health Education Pavilion, 1919 Johnson Ave., SLO. The classes are designed to help patients better manage this disease.
