ARTS Obispo is presenting, Art After Dark Los Osos

Lifelong Learners of the Central Coast is offering five new classes in July. “Meditation for the Soul,” is from10 a.m.-noon Monday, July 13 at the SLO Adult School. “Journey of the Universe — What’s It All About?” 2-3:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 15 at the Oak Creek Commons in Paso Robles. “Basic Genetics From the Beginning Until Now,” six Monday sessions — July 20, 27 and Aug. 3, 17, 24 and 31 from 10 a.m.-noon at KCBX studios in SLO. “Taking Great Nature Photos,” 10-noon Wednesday, July 22 at the Los Osos Oaks Nature Reserve. And “Expressing Your Personal Philosophy,” 10-noon Thursday, July 23 at the SLO Adult School. Courses are open to the general public and each session is $5 for members and $10 for non-members. The July 4 Gay Pride Beach & BBQ day takes place in Pismo Beach from 1-10 p.m. This is a free family event. Spend the day with the Pride Committee in their massive LGBT-friendly compound. Pack your chairs, towels, and sunscreen.  Enjoy music, food and drink, beach games and fireworks. Look for the giant rainbow flags just south of the Grand Avenue beach access.

Join the Arroyo Grande Library on Wednesday, July 8 at 2 p.m. at for Japanese Drummers from the San Luis Buddhist Temple who will play traditional and modern Taiko drumming songs. The library is located at 800 W. Branch St.

The Cayucos Lioness Club will be calling its Annual Fourth of July Bingo Game from 1-4 p.m. Saturday, July 4 at the Cayucos Vet’s Hall. For over 40 years one of the main goals of the Lioness Club has been to raise money to support swimming lessons given at the Cayucos Elementary School. For three weeks all of the children from grades K-8 have free swimming lessons at the Hardie Park Pool. The proceeds from the Fourth of July Bingo game supports this program, together with scholarships for the Cayucos Junior Lifeguard Program. Call (805) 995-0739 for more information.

ARTS Obispo, in conjunction with the South Bay Community Center, is presenting, Art After Dark Los Osos, a new pilot program on the last Friday of the month from 6-9 p.m. at the South Bay Community Center, 2180 Palisades Ave., Los Osos. Over 20 artists each month will showcase their work in a pop-up gallery setting, complete with live jazz, with wine, beer and food available for sale. The inaugural event kicks is June 26 with 23 visual artists including painter Flo Bartell, glass sculptor George Jercich, acrylic painter Steven deLuque and woodworker Jim Amberg. The Justin Pecot Trio will play. The event is free to the public with all age groups welcome. Future events are July 31, Aug. 28, Sept. 25 and Oct. 30. The Cayucos Lioness Club will put on its famous pancake breakfast fundraiser from 8 a.m. to noon Sunday, July 5 at the Cayucos Vet’s Hall and will feature fluffy melt-in-your-mouth pancakes, sizzling sausage, fresh fruit, juice and hot coffee. The cost is $8 for adults and $5 for children under-12. The fundraiser will benefit the numerous projects that the Lioness Club has sponsored for over 60 years like the mutt mitt program.

The San Luis Obispo Botanical Garden has some special offerings in July. The garden is located in El Chorro regional Park on Hwy 1 across form Cuesta College.
• Kids’ Adventure Camp. This year’s Adventure Camp is from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily July 13 – 17 for 2nd-6th grade kids. Camp focuses on the five Mediterranean climate zones of the world — California, Central Chile, Cape Province of South Africa, South and Western Australia and the Mediterranean Sea Basin in Europe — and the scientific study of the Earth. Wilshire Health & Community Services and Festival Mozaic are teeming up to screen a documentary about the power of music in all of our lives. The Los Osos Filipino community is holding a benefit barbecue from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, July 5 in the parking lot at Ralph’s Market in Los Osos. Cost is $9 a plate and you’ll get half a chicken, rice, beans green salad. Lumpia (egg rolls), and pansit (Filipino noodles), and chicken adobo with rice will be available. A new art exhibition — “No Grades, Just Talent” — featuring the artwork of 18 of the Central Coast’s finest art teachers, will show at Art Central, 1329 Monterey St., San Luis Obispo. San Luis Obispo County’s empower Program will take its message to the streets in July setting up a fun informational booth outside the County Government Center from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Thursdays in July. EmPower staff will give out prizes and advice on reducing energy usage while keeping your home cool and visitors will be able to spin a wheel for prizes, answer trivia questions, find out about lowering their carbon footprint and learn about saving on utility bills with home energy upgrades. Each week there will be a new theme and a raffle for a three-pack of energy efficient LED light bulbs – a $30 value. There will also be plenty of information on making a home more energy efficient while improving its comfort and indoor air quality.

SLO Skiers, a non-profit sport and social club, is having its next free monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 1 at the Elks’ Club Lodge, 222 Elks Ln., in San Luis Obispo. Membership is $40 a year and is open to all adults. Sports activities and social events are held all year long. Need to visit someone or bail someone out of the hoosegow? The County Sheriff’s Department has temporarily closed the main County Jail lobby for construction, so you will have to go to an alternative reception area. The main jail lobby will be closed June 29 through July 3 and includes the Records and Warrants Unit, Visiting Area and Custody Administration. The closure will affect where the public visits inmates and all inmates housed in the main jail will visit in the Intake/Release Center visiting area. Visitors can check in at the IRC lobby, located next door to the main jail lobby, during the closure. Arrive at least 45 minutes early and all visits are first come, first served.

The 31st Annual Central Coast Renaissance Festival returns to San Luis Obispo’s Laguna Lake Park Saturday and Sunday, July 18-19, and all ye Lords and Ladies are invited to lace up that bodice and strap on ye ol’ cod piece and come enjoy a romp back to 1585, and the reign of Queen Elizabeth I.
Tickets are $18 for adults, $12 for seniors and ages 6-15, and under-6 free. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and 10-5 Sunday. Parking at the Madonna Inn Meadows is $8 with a free shuttle bus to and from the festival. For more information see: www.CCRenFaire.com.
With three stages, the festival is packed with exciting acts including a falconry show, comedic stunt show involving juggling, fire eating and acrobatics, period dancing, authentic marionettes, storytelling, a comedy parrot show, a family friendly magic show and much more. Eight music groups, including the hilarious Merry Wives of Windsor and the irreverent Poxy Boggards, will perform throughout the day. A full contact joust is held twice daily and there will be a dressage demonstration.
Queen Elizabeth, played by actress Thena MacArthur, will visit, accompanied by her magnificently attired courtiers, guards and attendants. Over 500 costumed participants representing all levels of Renaissance-era society will welcome her to the village.
Visitors will be tempted by the delicious aroma coming from the food vendors. A variety of refreshments will include Renaissance Faire staples like roasted turkey legs, meat pies, Cornish pasties, barbecue, wood fired pizza, foods from the Orient, corn on the cob, ice cream and more. Wine, ale and honey mead will be available, along with freshly squeezed juices, teas and water.

• Live wolves at the library: 3 p.m. Thursday, June 25. Meet live wolves up close while you learn about their survival skills in the wilderness and how they change when they become domesticated. For ages 3-up. Part of the 2015 Summer Reading Program. Event will be held at the South Bay Community Center, 2180 Palisades Ave.
• 4-H birding: go “Bird Sleuthing” with the 4-H Nature Detectives at 3 p.m. Thursday, July 9. Space is limited, call to reserve a space. Make a birdfeeder and learn about local birds. Free kids science workshop for ages 5-12. Sponsored by Rita’s Rainbow.

Artifacts Gallery, 789 Main St., Cambria, will premiere the exclusive, “Hats Off To Dr. Seuss!” exhibit Saturday-Sunday, June 27-28. The exhibition will feature Dr. Seuss’s never-before-seen hat collection alongside his little-known secret art — a series of estate-authorized artworks adapted from Ted Geisel’s original drawings, paintings, and sculpture. Register now for the County Sheriff’s Youth Summer Camps held at various elementary schools throughout the county. The free camps are for 6th-8th grade students living in the unincorporated areas of SLO County and are part of a violence prevention program taught by trained law enforcement officers. The summer camps provide fun activities and games and teach children how to avoid taking part in bullying, violence and gangs. They encourage kids to make responsible choices in their lives. The camps are June 22-26 at Dana Elementary School in Nipomo; July 13-17 at Cayucos Elementary School; and Aug. 3-7 at Lillian Larsen Elementary in San Miguel.
