The fifth Annual Morro Bay K-9 Walk-a-Thon is set for 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 30 at Morro Bay City Park. There will be a 1-mile and a 1-1/2 mile walk for dogs and their owners (registration is $20 and includes a goodie bag). There will be police dog demos, picture booths, vendors and food booths, and a dog adoption event. Eco-Rotary Club of Morro Bay is hosting the Third Annual Eco Faire from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, May 31 at St. Timothy’s Church Hall, 962 Piney Way in Morro Bay. More than 30 environmental organizations will have booths offering information, demonstrations, and products of an ecological nature. Admission is free. There’s a special presentation at 1 p.m. by the Permaculture Guild, a water conservation solutions organization, addressing the drought with a panel of experts discussing the topic, “Got Water? What Drought is Really About in our Area.” At 3 p.m. there will be live music with Zen Mountain Posts and there will be an eco kids’ corner and a silent auction to benefit projects that Eco-Rotary Club of Morro Bay support. • Start off summer with “Beach Blanket Bingo” on the patio from 1-4 p.m. Monday, June 15. Bring a blanket and win prizes, enjoy refreshments on the patio. And from 3-3:45 that same day they’ll have something called “Seabirds Olympics,” for those 4-older.
• In anticipation of Lee Harper’s novel, “Go Set A Watchman,” the library will screen the movie, “To Kill A Mockingbird,” at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 24. Popcorn will be served.

Wilshire Hospice is putting out a call for volunteers with training session set to begin from 1-5 p.m. Thursday, July 9 and continue on subsequent Thursdays through Aug. 6. The training is held in San Luis Obispo, but volunteers are needed in all areas of SLO County and Northern Santa Barbara County, especially Santa Maria. Spanish-speaking volunteers are a plus. Hospice in-home volunteers provide support and companionship for Hospice patients and their families. Hospice training presents a soulful opportunity for personal growth while equipping you with the skills and support you will need for a meaningful volunteer experience. The SLO County Food Bank Coalition will once again sponsor the Summer Food Service Program through its countywide, Lovin’ Lunchbox program. It’s the sixth summer, the Food Bank will be helping make sure that children in low-income areas stay healthy by providing them with access to free meals to children and teens ages 18-under at 28 locations this summer, starting June 15. Mb Burdick paintingChelsea’s Agora Gallery in New York City will feature the original artworks of Morro Bay artist, M.L. Burdick, in a new show, “Spatial Articulation.” The exhibition opens on June 12 and runs through July 2. Like slides under a microscope, Burdick’s ink and mixed media pieces illustrate the underlying beauty in the strata of organic forms magnified. Each piece is an experiment that creates new life straight from the ether. Even at her most experimental, Burdick keeps her work polished, displaying a mastery of aesthetic and curatorial judgment. Agora Gallery is a contemporary fine art gallery located in the heart of Chelsea’s fine art district in New York.

Seaside Gallery in Pismo Beach, California will host a solo exhibition and sale of the paintings of Karen Fedderson.  A resident of nearby Santa Barbara, her oil paintings reflect her love and enchantment of the Pacific Ocean, especially that of the Central Coast.  TheShell_Beachre will be an open reception at the gallery on Saturday, May 30 from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m.  Fedderson will be on hand to talk about her process of painting what she sees. The City of Arroyo Grande Recreation Services Department, Arroyo Grande Lions Club and Haggen Food and Pharmacy will present the 16th Annual Father-Daughter Date Night, Saturday, June 6, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the South County Regional Center, 800 W. Branch Street.  This event for fathers and daughters will include an evening of dinner, dancing, contests, photos, king and princess crowning and more.   The cost is $48 per couple, plus $22 for each additional daughter.  Ages 4-years old through adult are welcome for this semi-formal affair.  Couples can register at the Arroyo Grande Recreation Services office, 1221 Ash Street, through Friday, May 29.  For ticket information, call Brenda Barrow, Recreation Supervisor, at 473-5476.

The DANA Cultural Center invites the community to an evening with the Cuesta Jazz Faculty Quartet at the Dana Adobe. The event will be on June 6 and will include a martini bar, catering by Rhonda Kennedy, a silent auction, and a fabulous performance by the Jazz Faculty Quartet. Windmill and PelicansDon’t miss out on the 28th Annual Afternoon of Epicurean Delights on June 7.  The goal for this stellar event is for every dollar raised to go directly to services provided by the Health & Prevention Division of Community Action Partnership of San Luis Obispo County (CAPSLO).  Tickets are $100 and may be purchased through Brown Paper Tickets at aed.capslo.org, or directly from the Health & Prevention office by phone at 544-2498. The event takes place from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the beautiful, tranquil gardens and grounds of the historic Chapman House by the Sea in Shell Beach.  This estate on the bluffs of the Pacific Ocean, is one of the most spectacular locations in San Luis Obispo County.  Attendees are invited to stroll through the stunning gardens, enjoy panoramic ocean views, or sit poolside and listen to great music, all while tasting over 50 of SLO County’s most renowned and award winning restaurants, caterers, wineries, breweries, and confectioners, who give of their food and drink, as well as their time to benefit the CAPSLO Health & Prevention Division. horseThere will be a Kids Summer Horse Camp Saturday, June 13 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. for young ones ages 7 and up at 2991 Poco Rd., Templeton. The cost is $75 and kids will learn how to connect and communicate with horses, promoting self-esteem and emotional wellbeing. Other basic horsemanship activities include: horse grooming/cleaning, responding to body language/behaviors, leading by halter and rope, arts and crafts, watercolor with horses, and light horseback riding. Kids entering grades 1-6 in the fall are invited to participate in Coastal Christian School’s Conqueror Kids’ Camp, a summer day camp scheduled June 15-August 7 at their new Oak Park Boulevard campus in Pismo Beach. The camp is available from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. with extended morning and afternoon hours available. Weeklong themes include Race Week, Bike/Skate Safety Week, Patriotic Week, Health/Fitness/Nutrition Week, Animals/Reptiles Week, Truck/Big Machine Week, Olympic Week and Western/Camping Week. The cost is $160 per week with a one-time registration fee of $35. A weekly discount of 10 percent applies to additional siblings. Camp space is limited, so early registration is recommended. Hawthorne showAfter 10 years as a partner at the Gallery at the Network, located at 778 Higuera St., in SLO and over 25 years painting landscapes on the Central Coast, Dotty Hawthorne is moving to Portland, Ore., to be near family. And her farewell to local art lovers will be in the form of a final show at the gallery, with a special artist’s reception set for 6-9 p.m. Friday, June 5. Refreshments will be served.

Author, Richard Guiney will sign his book, “Me ‘n’ Shorty,” from 2-4 p.m. Saturday, May 30 at Coalesce Bookstore Chapel, 845 Main St., Morro Bay. In the book, it’s the height of the Great Depression when Richard Guiney250,000 teenagers were on their own traveling all over the U.S. Two naïve 17-year-old boys met on the road and decided to team-up for their journey from Tennessee to California. They had no idea of the dangers, the adventures, the love and the lessons in life that would force them to grow up fast. Guiney is a native Californian. His first job was walking racehorses at the age of 8 while his 18-year-old brother was a jockey. At 26, he became employed at the famous Hearst State Historical Monument, where he was employed for over 32 years. This is Guiney’s first novel.

With summer fast approaching, the local blood bank is asking for donations to be ready for the time of year when demand for blood is highest but donations fall off. United Blood Services California needs to collect over 5,000 pints of blood and platelets before May 31, in order to ensure a steady and ample supply,” the company said in a news release. “As of May 14 we have collected 1,800 donations and we still have 3,200 donations to go.” A special donation campaign is now underway. “In an effort to keep a ready supply, United Blood Services is issuing a ‘5,000 Donations Summer Kick-off Challenge,’ where we’re thanking our donors with double the Hero Points in our Hero Rewards Store at all fixed site locations in Ventura, Santa Barbara, Santa Maria, San Luis Obispo and at all mobile blood drives.” Donors must be at least 16, weigh 110-plus, and are in good health. A celebration and exhibition of student work from the STEAM program at Los Osos Middle School is set for 4-7 p.m. Thursday, June 4 at the school, 1555 El Moro Ave. STEAM stands for “Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Mathematics” and is the new teaching model being used for 6th-8th graders. Students are working in groups to apply skills and knowledge learned this year to solve a real world problem. Students completed an interest survey and had choices in what projects to take on.

SLO Skiers, a local non-profit sport and social club, is having its monthly meeting on the first Wednesday of the month, June 3, at the Elks’ Club Lodge, 222 Elks Ln., in San Luis Obispo.
