“Kid President”, Year of the Ram, SLO Skate Park & more!

By Camas FrankThisWeekinSLOCN

There was joy to be found in some of the articles written since the last issue of the SLO City News hit the stands. That might be due in part to a little bit of “joyful rebellion” brought to town with a visit from “Kid President” Robby Novak and his brother-in-law, creators of the hit YouTube Series and now a New York Times Best Seller. They delighted close to 1,000 students at the Cal Poly campus with an uplifting message, right in the middle of midterms.

For an added touch of local and community pride, the Cal Poly Band, more than 200 of them, are on their way to represent SLO in San Francisco’s Chinese New Year Parade. Last year they won accolades as best adult band out of the 80 organizations taking part.

The City of SLO itself had some welcome news too with the Grand Opening of the skate park in Santa Rosa Park. Sure to be a destination for the entire Central Coast, the park was close to 20 years in the making. Mayor Jan Marx’s son Joe, a long time skater, flew in to join the community for the event, all the way from Sun Valley, ID.

In countywide good news, SLO schools are seeing more money in next year’s budget than they have since before the financial crash, but as County Office of Education Superintendent James Brescia explains, with larger money bags comes weightier responsibility.

Those stories plus traffic lights, homegrown start-ups and more in the March 5 issue of the SLO City News.
