Light Therapy

Mainstream light therapy has historically referred to the use of an artificial light source to treat mood disorders associated with a lack of sunlight. Light is a powerful source for creating positive health changes and its mechanism of action is the topic of much research. Other therapeutic uses of light are becoming main stream in the fields of physical therapy and psychology. Two of these include low-level lasers and guided imagery/visualization with light.
Low-level laser therapy involves exposing tissue to low levels of red and near infrared light. Studies have indicated therapeutic benefits from exposure to these specific wavelengths of light; including, reduced inflammation, edema, and joint disorders; promotion of healing; and alleviating pain. An article published by The National Institute of Health discusses the firm evidence to support laser use in alleviating pain. Their review of 16 randomized clinical trials found that laser therapy reduces acute neck pain immediately after treatment, as well as 22 weeks after completion of treatment in patients with chronic neck pain. Scientists are still investigating exactly how this works, but it appears to involve the increased production of ATP within the cell, as well as a photochemical reaction that causes an electron to become excited and jump from a low-energy orbit to a higher energy orbit. Both of these mechanisms result in energy that can be used to perform cellular tasks, such as healing.
Visualization and Guided Imagery have long been used by psychologists for the management of stress and pain control. These techniques can reduce blood pressure and stress hormones, stimulate immune systems, and influence healing. One such technique used to alleviate physical pain is the visualization of light in the painful area. While in a comfortable position with your painful area supported, imagine a white healing light glowing in the area you are experiencing pain. Visualize the light clearing the cells of what is causing the pain and re-invigorating every cell with perfect health and relaxation.
Both of these forms of light therapy are used at Spirit Winds and have proven beneficial in the physical rehabilitation of our patients. Could the visualization of light in our bodies promote changes similar to those induced by lasers?  The resulting benefits are similar, but further research may soon provide the answer. Let us know if we can help you incorporate more light into your life.
