Local Emergency Declared

After years of drought, winter has come in like an angry momma bear, drenching parts of SLO County, causing mudslides and localized flooding, to the point of disaster.
According to Ron Alsop, director of the County Office of Emergency Services or OES, the resultant damage, “and the continuing damaging effects from the recent storms throughout the County, a Proclamation of Local Emergency was made by the County of San Luis Obispo Board of Supervisors this afternoon [Jan. 24].”
The local declaration comes on the eels of Gov. Jerry Brown’s Jan. 23 proclamation of a State of Emergency in 50 of 53 California counties, including SLO County, due to damage from a series of fierce storms.
Alsop said, the County’s Proclamation of Local Emergency, “was made in part because local agencies require assistance beyond their capabilities to respond to storm related recovery efforts.”
The proclamation “streamlines the approval process necessary to obtain additional State assistance and resources,” Alsop said. “Together, the local and State proclamations also allow local government agencies to apply for disaster cost reimbursement through the California Disaster Assistance Act.”
Of course there’s a catch. Alsop said the declarations apply to damages sustained by “local government public agency infrastructure and related losses.”
Still, County OES is asking residents and businesses that sustained damages to report the damages. Report by phone at (805) 781-5020 (leave a message), via email at: www.slocounty.ca.gov/oes
(click on the “Contact Us” icon); or mail to: County OES, 1055 Monterey St, Rm. D430, San Luis Obispo, CA 93408.
Provide name, contact phone number, address and a brief overview of damages incurred, including repair costs and other costs of damages if known, Alsop said.
“The information will be complied and given to State and Federal authorities to help determine if the County might qualify for a Federal disaster declaration,” Alsop said, “which could provide assistance for individuals and businesses.”
