Nonprofit Sends Kids School Shopping

Local non-profit, Assistance League of San Luis Obispo County is nearing completion of its annual effort to provide disadvantaged students with clothing.

As of November, some 1,100 children in grades K through 12 have shopped for school-appropriate clothing at local retailers — Old Navy in San Luis Obispo and Kohl’s in Paso Robles. By the end of December, 1,400 students will have been served.

School personnel identify families in need although the numbers helped are down from last year when 1,600 children benefitted from the program. The San Luis Obispo County Office of Education has reported that 46-percent of students attending school in the county are living in poverty.
