When these photos were taken the Nuclear Regulatory Commission was still looking at a potential license renewal of California’s last remaining operational nuclear power plant. A Pro-Diablo demonstration “Rally for Diablo Canyon Power Plant” was held near the SLO County Government Center around lunchtime June 17.
The event was co-hosted by Californians for Green Nuclear Power – a three-year-old group of mostly retired professionals, families and friends of industry workers – and the union International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) 1245 representing plant workers.
While the Union framed the issue of Diablo’s continued operation in terms of a continual infusion of cash into the Central Coast economy over three decades, their representatives were meeting in Sacrament on a seven party deal that would make this rally a moot point.
William Gloege, founder of Californians for Clean Nuclear Power was distraught because he believes that the energy source is a solution to global climate change.
“I’m doing this for my grandchildren,” Gloege, a retired municipal worker, said, “I sailed for years after retiring, but this is something useful.” – Camas Frank
