Roller Gals Get Boot Camp 101

Roller derby is alive and well on the Central Coast, with a place to play. SLO’s Santa Rosa Park now has it’s very own flat track, and it’s home to the Central Coast Roller Derby a 501c3 profit.
Central Coast Roller Derby presented Boot Camp 101 on March 27 with a day of drill. The “boot camp” covered all of the Minimum Skills Requirements (MSR) of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) although it was technically open to men and women of all skill levels, 18 years and older.
The program is comprised of, “general, athletic on-skates training,” focused on the fundamentals of skating, safety, and roller derby strategy and rules.
Photographer Kristin Steer reports that the first roller derby match can be daunting for both players and spectators as play moves at breakneck speed.
The main players to watch are the “jammers” with stars on their helmets, as they can only score for their teams by lapping everyone else.
Since 2006, Central Coast Roller Derby has donated over $50,000 to various local organizations.
