SLO Pride in the Plaza Kicks Off With March

The Gay and Lesbian Alliance of the Central Coast (GALA) hosted the 21th Annual Celebration of Central Coast Pride in SLO’s Mission Plaza.

For the first time the traditional Pride in the Plaza event kicked off with a march featuring a large contingent of students from the Cal Poly campus clubs dedicated to diversity.

A full schedule of events was included featuring Lady Gaga, or at least a passable impersonator, a drag queen show and an local ABBA cover band.

The tradition of gay pride events in July commemorates the 1969 Stonewall Riot that followed a police raid on the Stonewall Gay Bar in New York City.

President Barack Obama officially designated Stonewall and the surrounding 7 acres a National Monument on June 24, 2016.
