Spring Into Farmers’ Market

downtownfarmlogo9.3.15Each Thursday the Downtown SLO Farmers’ Market invites visitors to come Discover Local Flavor.  From the fresh produce to hometown barbeque, unique dishes to local entertainers, it’s no wonder that the market has become world famous.  With a rotating cast of entertainers, patrons to The Market can expect fresh faces and unique shows every week.
image003One group that certainly exemplifies The Market’s mission to showcase different local talent is Music Motive’s Bucket Busters. First performing at The Market in April 2009, these musicians practice “bucket drumming” on trashcans, water bottles and of course- buckets. Made up of twelve members, ages ten to seventeen, the Bucket Busters are a unique percussion group that strives to teach its members community service, awareness, team building, leadership, performance skills and musicianship. Furthermore, donations from their various Central Coast performances and sales of their CD “Trash Talk” help provide a scholarship fund for kids who otherwise would not have any opportunity to learn music. Bucket Busters will be performing at The Market on March 10th along with familiar artists like Kaylee Smith and Sky & Kat.

image005This month, indie surf rock band Box the Oxford is also joining The Downtown SLO Farmers’ Market scene. Though Colton, Andrew, Eric, and Davis are all current engineering students at Cal Poly, their hometowns range from San Diego, all the way to Seattle. The name Box the Oxford was derived from the phrase “boxing your oxford shoe” which is old colloquial slang for following your own productive, limited style. The band claims influence from musical talents like Foster the People, Local Natives, and Vampire Weekend. They’ve been performing live for roughly two years and had their first performance at The Market in January of 2016! Each member comes from a different musical background and thus their style is a mix of their distinctive tastes. Box the Oxford promises that at every live performance people can expect to see “Colton’s big dopey smile and Davis’ beard.” Catch them at The Market on March 3rd, along with Nathan Rivera, Lord of the Cello, John Morton, and Nicholas Plewtong.

image007Besides all of The Market’s talented entertainers, visitors can look forward to the annual Downtown Bunny Trail happening Thursday, March 24th from 6-8:30PM. Join the “egg-citement” as Downtown Bunny invites all the children and their families to hop along the Bunny Trail, visiting businesses throughout Downtown collecting candy and treats on the way. Don’t forget to pick up your map and bag, and make sure to look out for Downtown Bunny for photos at the end of your journey.
Then at the end of the month on March 31st, market goers both young and young at heart, can get in on an interactive learning experience at our STEAM Alley. With an emphasis in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math, this month our STEAM Alley will feature The teVelde Conservatory of Music.
As always, at The Market you will be able to find farm-fresh produce and goods, a huge assortment of delicious cuisine, and kid-favorites like face painting, balloon animals, bounce house, and Downtown SLO’s furry friend, Downtown Brown.  Downtown SLO Farmers’ Market is the Central Coast’s best Thursday evening activity to Discover Local Flavor.
