3P:Yes- The newest edition of “Star Wars” hits the silver screen soon.  While the San Francisco Giants do not employ a robotic 3PS they do have three “P’s” batting in a row who have helped vault the defending World Series Champions right back into the pennant race.  Having recently won eight out of ten (and swept the Dodgers!) the Giants have crept to within two games of the West Division lead due to the recent play of the heart of their batting order.
Two-hole hitter Joe Panik, number three hitter Angel Pagan and cleanup slugger Buster Posey have all been on a tear as San Francisco is beginning to thumb their collective noses at all of the naysayers who buried them early on because of suspect pitching (granted) and because the Giants only win World Series trophies on even-numbered years  (’10, ’12 and ’14).  Panik has provided a stable presence at second base and helps to set the table for the big hitters as he is flirting with a .300 average.  Pagan (.323) has shaken off the constant injury bug which afflicted his play last year and is a solid presence as the outfield general playing centerfield.  And Buster Posey is, well, Buster Posey!  The heart and soul of the franchise is hitting .311 and clutching up on ribbies and home runs as usual. Casey Connection- How wonderful it is to see Cal Poly’s baseball team gaining a little traction as the season winds down.  At press time the Mustangs had forged their Big West Conference record into a respectable 10-6 won-loss tally and were sitting just one game out of second place.  Cal Poly had languished out of the gate at the start of the season but the Mustangs are hopefully hitting their stride just at the right juncture of the season.  It ain’t how you start, but how you finish! Sports Bouquet- Ah, spring is in the air and the sports world has blossomed.  NBA basketball playoffs, NHL hockey playoffs, a plethora of professional golf playoffs, Major League Baseball starting up—sports in general.  What say we tap into the aromas of a few of those varietals?  Don’t forget your Claritin!
Hock It Up- I’m going to spew forth a personal belief of mine:  Playoff hockey is the bomb!  There is quite possibly no better playoff scenario around than a seventh game on ice where it’s all on the line.  The drama is quite gripping throughout as bodies fly and sticks are high.  Those hockey dudes are pound for pound the toughest men alive on the planet.  Check some of this compelling action out if you dare, eh? Baby Steps. Well, the Cal Poly Baseball Team is trying to inch its way back into respectability and had a fine road trip up in Corvallis, Ore., recently.
The Mustangs took two of three from the nationally-ranked Beavers and had a shot at a sweep before OSU came from behind to secure the game three win, 4-2. Cal Poly went into the series with a 7-14 overall record.
The two outstanding victories against one of the perennial national championship contenders should provide a ray of hope to a Mustang team that had high hopes going into the season. It was particularly nice to see ace right-hander, Casey Bloomquist, spin a complete-game four hitter in game one of the series.   Continue reading Sports Shorts

Local Alert- Let’s give a huge round of applause to our local girls’ Five Cities AYSO Region 83 Under-12 All Star Soccer Team, which has advanced to the Western States Championships, which will begin play on March 22 in Lake Forest, Calif.  These soccer girls forged their way through a truly resistant gauntlet!  First, they had to advance out of the Area Q Tournament held in Lompoc.  They were able to accomplish that feat by capturing five straight games which catapulted them on to Bakersfield where they represented Area Q in the Section 10 Championships.  The Lady Warriors were triumphant in Bako and will now move on to Lake Forest.   Continue reading Sports Shorts

Hitch up your britches Raider fan because the silver and black are on their way back…purportedly.  The recent NFL season is in the books but the NFL is in the news 24/7.  The East Bay bunglers are turning over a new leaf…purportedly!  With the hiring of former Bronco defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio the Raiders have positioned themselves to resuscitate the forlornness of a  franchise that has suffered through abysmal seasons for the past several years.  Del Rio has peppered his coaching staff with smart, veteran men of distinction in order to right the ship.  If they could land a top-flight running back (think Adrian Peterson) to take the pressure off of up-and-coming quarterback Derek Carr they may be in the mix come playoff time.  Continue reading Sports Shorts

“Gonna Be A Showdown”- And there was. At Mission Prep. Just as the preceding musical line from the Electric Light Orchestra song states. (Um, dating oneself here but more on that later). MP exacted sweet revenge on Righetti High School by pounding out a 58-52 victory in front of a standing-room-only fervent following. During warmups an independent observer would have sworn that the Royals were going to get their goose cooked as Righetti trotted out one of the most formidable collections of prep basketball height one could imagine! But the eye of this beholder came to envision the beauty with which Mission Prep dispensed of the Warriors. The Royals’ penchant for unselfish play on the night and for buying into Coach Terrance Harris’ team concept was refreshing to observe. As Righetti keyed on Columbia University-bound Quinton Adlesh, his running mate at the guard position, Brandon Jones, enacted his own backup plan and tossed in a gritty, team-best 19 points. A perplexing aspect of the game was that Righetti chose to station their three 6’4” plus front court players up top and out on the wings defensively. Mission was able to break those defensive sets down to their advantage and come away with the important win. Good teams. Good battle. See you both in the playoffs. Continue reading Sports Shorts

Klay’s Pigeons- Are you serious? Did that just happen? Did the Golden State Warriors’ Klay Thompson just drop 37 points on the woeful Sacramento Kings…in the third quarter alone? Yikes! That feat was a record setter that we may never again witness in our sportstime. I may have just made that word up. Thompson hit 13 of 13 shots, nine of which were 3-pointers, and tacked on two free throws for good measure. He pigeonholed 52 points for the game. And here I thought that the spelling of his first name was his only aberration! Continue reading Sports Shorts
