Volunteers Needed for 33rd Annual Coastal Cleanup, Sept. 16

Volunteers are getting organized for the 33rd Annual Coastal Cleanup Day, set for Saturday, Sept. 16 at various locations around SLO County and up and down California’s Coast.
Locally, The Environmental Center of SLO (ECOSLO) supervises the event, which runs 9 a.m. to noon at a myriad of different sites — both coastal and inland lakes and waterways.
Participants are encouraged to bring grocery bags for reuse, a bucket, and gloves. Cleanup sites will have some bags and gloves available. Closed toed shoes are recommended and bring a reusable water bottle.
Volunteers will pick up debris and track what they find on data cards. Children will enjoy educational information and learn what they can do to eliminate trash and conserve the environment.
Volunteers are encouraged to register ahead of time online at: ecoslo.org/coastal-cleanup-day or they can show up at one of the locations before 9 a.m. and sign up. More information and clean up site lists are available on the website.
Locally, 25 clean ups are planned, including Hearst State Beach at San Simeon, San Simeon Village Pico Beach Access, and San Simeon State Park Campground. In Cambria they’ll be at Moonstone Beach-Shamel Park, Fiscalini Ranch Reserve; Estero Bluffs, Cayucos Pier, 24th Street Beach in Cayucos; and the Chevron Dog Beach at Toro Creek Road.
Morro Strand State Beach has three spots — the Strand Campground, Atascadero Road-Hwy 41 Access, Morro Rock Beach and harbor, and Tidelands Park.
There are two special trips to the Sandspit through the National Estuary Program and across the harbor by boat, which volunteers must preregister for. See: www.mbnep.org/#s-home and click on the Coastal Clean up icon, to sign up.
In Los Osos they’ll be at the 2nd Street Pier in Baywood (bring your kayak), Spooner’s Cove and the Sandspit Day Use Area in Montana de Oro.
There will also be clean ups on Avila Beach and Olde Port Beach in PSL, as well as Pismo Beach at the Pier and the Sea Venture, Shell Beach and even Pirate’s Cove Nude Beach, where gloves and good shoes could be especially important.
