‘Wonder Woman’ Funny, Charming and Badass

It is about time that a stunning, wonderful female superhero appears before us in the endless parade of comics turning into movies.

That it was also directed by a woman, (Patty Jenkins), makes “Wonder Woman” my new favorite movie of 2017. That and it was a thrilling, wonderful script with amazing special effects and a nod to where woman should be (saving the world) and not fighting the misogynistic reality of today.

The plot: before she was Wonder Woman she was Diana, Princess of the Amazons and a warrior trained by her aunt, Antiope (Robin Wright of “The Princess Bride”). When a pilot crashes and tells of conflict in the outside world, she leaves home to fight a war to end all wars, discovering her full powers and true destiny.

The Princess of the Amazons does her magic tricks with lasso, sword and shield. Gal Gadot is the perfect Wonder Woman — funny, charming and badass anytime she wants too, plus she delivers the dramatic parts in an excellent way.

Chris Pine as Steve Trevor made him much more interesting as a person and as a character. He was brave but also a bit of the comic relief guy but without getting way out of hand.

Connie Nielsen as her mother, Hippolyta, was excellent casting made much more interesting with their chemistry. Saïd Taghmaoui, Ewen Bremner, Eugene Brave Rock and Lucy Davis, who play the rest of Trevor’s Team, were also fully flushed, caring and funny, extremely well written. The villainous twist was jaw dropping. Wonder Woman isn’t just a good movie it’s a perfect film.

The stunning scenes from the Amazon’s island were shot in Southern Italy: Matera in Basilicata and Castel Del Monte in Apulia. Steve Trevor sarcastically refers to Diana’s island home of Themyscira as “Paradise Island.” However, this is a nod to the original name for Wonder Woman’s homeland (the island of Amazons) in the comics.

In the 1980s, the name of the Amazon Island was changed to Themyscira, when comic book writers (George Perez specifically) updated and revamped the character. It has been referred to as “Themyscira” in all Wonder Woman media since then.

Steve Trevor’s sarcastic remark was actually written in as a nod to fans that remember the old name (which was used in the television show, as well as comics pre-dating the ‘80s).

This is the first female-directed live-action film to have a $100 million-plus budget. Worth every cent and you MUST see it in the theater. And then own it and show it to your girls repeatedly!
