Wilshire Community Services Celebrates a Nationwide Day of Neighborly Love

San Luis Obispo, CA –Wilshire Community Services celebrates National Good Neighbor Day and its growing Good Neighbor Program which currently serves nearly 300 individuals county-wide.

“We have a crucial need for volunteers, in every city, to assist with the rapidly growing need in our community. With as little as an hour per week, you can help us meet this need head on,” Explains Jessica Devereaux, Case Manager at Wilshire Community Services.

Join the Movement: National Good Neighbor Day – Monday, 9-28-15 – Countywide!

“As our Nation struggles to build friendship among the peoples of this world, we are mindful that the noblest human concern is concern for others. Understanding, love, and respect build cohesive families and communities. The same bonds cement our Nation, and the nations of the world. For most of us, this sense of community is nurtured and expressed in our neighborhoods where we give each other an opportunity to share and feel part of a larger family…I call upon the people of the United States and interested groups and organizations to observe such day with appropriate ceremonies and activities.” – Jimmy Carter, 1978.

Donna, an older adult resident of San Luis Obispo County, became a client of the Good Neighbor Program in 2014 after she was diagnosed with cancer that had metastasized to her bones and lungs. She is receiving weekly chemotherapy treatments and will continue to do so for the remainder of her life.

Donna also suffers from cataracts which cause sun blindness, making it difficult and dangerous for her to drive herself to her afternoon treatments. Good Neighbor Program volunteers have been assisting with this need weekly for the past year. Donna is thankful for the program and its volunteers whom she describes as kind and helpful. She says, “Some of the volunteers even carry my lunch for me!”
