The Wait’s Over For ‘Those Who Wait’

By Neil Farrell ~

It’s taken some 9 years, dozens of small fund-raising efforts, countless hours navigating the permitting process, and seemingly decades worth of hard work, but a public bronze sculpture has been erected near Target Rock, dedicated to “Those Who Wait.”

The Central Coast Women for Fisheries, a non-profit support group for the commercial fishing industry, has been working on the sculpture, which is similar to one on the East Coast, as a tribute to the fishing way of life and to the families who wait and pray for their safe return.

The sculpture by acclaimed artist, Elizabeth MacQueen (see: www.macqueenfineart.com), consists of three lifelike figures — a fisherman’s wife and two small children — watching and waving as their fisherman father ventures out to sea. The statues were erected Friday, April 30 on a concrete pedestal near Target Rock and are currently covered by a tarp.

Cathy Novak, who along with Susan Maharry, Lori French and numerous others from CCWFA (see: www.womenforfish.org) has been working on the project for years, said they will be affixing fund-raising engraved tiles to the base and when that is completed, will hold a grand unveiling for the public. She anticipates that to be a couple of months.

Special thanks go out to Pam Daniels, Tom Hafer, Allen Root and David Rivas who worked to transport and install the bronzes, and the City Corp Yard for storing them for nearly a year.
