Morro Bay Gets Bike Friendly Award

Biking FamilyMost folks would agree — Morro Bay is a great place to ride bikes, what with light traffic, and Class-1 and Class-2 bike lanes crisscrossing town. And now it’s official, after the City was honored by a nationwide bicycle advocacy group.
The City of Morro Bay earned designation as a “Bicycle Friendly Community,” as certified by the League of American Bicyclists, the City said in a press release. “Only 325 communities in the United States have received this award. In San Luis Obispo County, Morro Bay joins the cities of Paso Robles, Arroyo Grande and San Luis Obispo.”
“Morro Bay earned this award because it welcomes bicyclists with trails, bike lanes, share-the-road campaigns, organized rides and bike-to-work events. In addition the League of American Bicyclists noted that the City has a current and comprehensive bike plan, a comprehensive and connected bicycling network, an up to date bicycle map, an active Citizens Bike Committee, cops on bikes and a bike coordinator on City staff.”
At the Jan. 13 City Council meeting, Robert Davis of the Morro Bay Citizen’s Bike Committee, presented the award on behalf of the bicyclist’s league. In addition to a certificate, the City received “Bicycle Friendly Community” signs to be posted around town.
The City will also be listed on the League’s website as an “attractive bike tourist destination” and the designation will be part of the City’s portfolio to attract prospective businesses and employers, reads the press release.
At the City Council meeting, Mayor Jamie Irons, thanked City bike manager, Barry Rands, bike coalition director, Dan Rivoire, Davis and the Citizens’ Bike Committee who worked on and submitted the award application.
