Sports Bouquet- Ah, spring is in the air and the sports world has blossomed.  NBA basketball playoffs, NHL hockey playoffs, a plethora of professional golf playoffs, Major League Baseball starting up—sports in general.  What say we tap into the aromas of a few of those varietals?  Don’t forget your Claritin!
Hock It Up- I’m going to spew forth a personal belief of mine:  Playoff hockey is the bomb!  There is quite possibly no better playoff scenario around than a seventh game on ice where it’s all on the line.  The drama is quite gripping throughout as bodies fly and sticks are high.  Those hockey dudes are pound for pound the toughest men alive on the planet.  Check some of this compelling action out if you dare, eh? Masterful- There’s a new sheriff in town on the PGA golf tour and his name is Jordan.  Indeed, Michael Jordan just pulled off the greatest feat of his illustrious career by capturing golf’s…  Did I get one over on you, oh gullible one?  Sorry ‘bout that.  Just clamoring for your attention.
Jordan Spieth is the newly-crowned Masters Champion as he went wire to wire for his first major championship.  Spieth’s four-stroke victory over Phil Mickelson and Justin Rose was a veritable walk in the park as Jordan paraded his way around the hallowed grounds of Augusta National in a record-tying 270 strokes for four rounds of play.  That computed to an astonishing 18 under par to match Tiger Woods for a record for the ages.  Time and again Spieth came up with the shots necessary to fend off his closest competitors as he calculated his approach shots, lagged putts magnificently and drained the inside-8-footers on a consistent basis.   Continue reading Sports Shorts

Baby Steps. Well, the Cal Poly Baseball Team is trying to inch its way back into respectability and had a fine road trip up in Corvallis, Ore., recently.
The Mustangs took two of three from the nationally-ranked Beavers and had a shot at a sweep before OSU came from behind to secure the game three win, 4-2. Cal Poly went into the series with a 7-14 overall record.
The two outstanding victories against one of the perennial national championship contenders should provide a ray of hope to a Mustang team that had high hopes going into the season. It was particularly nice to see ace right-hander, Casey Bloomquist, spin a complete-game four hitter in game one of the series.   Continue reading Sports Shorts

Local Alert- Let’s give a huge round of applause to our local girls’ Five Cities AYSO Region 83 Under-12 All Star Soccer Team, which has advanced to the Western States Championships, which will begin play on March 22 in Lake Forest, Calif.  These soccer girls forged their way through a truly resistant gauntlet!  First, they had to advance out of the Area Q Tournament held in Lompoc.  They were able to accomplish that feat by capturing five straight games which catapulted them on to Bakersfield where they represented Area Q in the Section 10 Championships.  The Lady Warriors were triumphant in Bako and will now move on to Lake Forest.   Continue reading Sports Shorts
