Man Attacks Woman with Hatchet, Shoots Himself

A young man is dead, an apparent suicide, and a woman was injured following a violent domestic disturbance in Los Osos.

According to the Sheriff’s Department, at about 8:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 4 deputies were sent to a domestic dispute involving a man and woman in the 400 block of Woodland Dr.

“When Deputies arrived,” Sheriff’s spokesman Tony Cipolla said in a news release, “the female victim says she was attacked by the male suspect with a hatchet. The victim suffered wounds from the attack but managed to escape the residence and run to a neighbor’s house for help.”

The 58-year-old victim was taken to the hospital, her condition was not released, however, she was reportedly alert and speaking with investigators. Cipolla said that during the incident, gunshots were heard from inside the home and deputies cordoned off the scene and set up a perimeter.

“The suspect was later located in the backyard of the home,” Cipolla said, “dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Investigators believe this is an isolated incident and there are no outstanding suspects. “ The deceased alleged attacker was identified as Kelly Neal Turpin, 25 of Los Osos.

Cipolla said Turpin and the victim were roommates and that she had recently asked him to move out of their shared residence. The investigation has led to changing the original disposition of the incident from “assault with a deadly weapon” to “attempted murder.”
